Website Terms of Use

Last updated: October 26, 2026

Welcome to Blue Ocean Counselling.

These Website Terms of Use explain the purpose of this website, the nature of the information provided, and the conditions associated with accessing and using its content and features.

Blue Ocean Counselling is operated by David W. Rainoshek, RTC, based on Denman Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Throughout this document, references to "I," "me," or "my" refer to David W. Rainoshek, operating as Blue Ocean Counselling. References to "you" or "your" refer to visitors and users of this website.

These Terms concern use of the website. They do not replace the informed-consent process, professional obligations, or agreements governing individual counselling services.

By accessing or using this website, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree with these Terms, please discontinue using the websit

1. Purpose of This Website

This website provides general information about Blue Ocean Counselling, including:

  • Individual online counselling services for adults in British Columbia

  • Areas of counselling focus and my approach to therapeutic work

  • Professional background, qualifications, and experience

  • Session fees and practical arrangements

  • Opportunities to ask questions or request an introductory consultation

  • Relevant policies concerning privacy, scheduling, and payment

The information is intended to help prospective clients make informed decisions about whether my services may be appropriate for their needs.

Website content is provided for general informational and educational purposes. It is not a substitute for individualized counselling, psychological assessment, medical care, legal advice, or other professional services.

2. Counselling Relationship and Informed Consent

Visiting this website, reading its content, submitting an inquiry, or participating in a free introductory consultation does not automatically establish a professional counselling relationship.

A counselling relationship begins when we have mutually agreed to work together, determined that the proposed services are appropriate, completed the necessary informed-consent process, and confirmed the relevant professional and administrative arrangements.

Before counselling begins, you will have an opportunity to discuss the nature and purpose of the services offered, the potential benefits and limitations of counselling, confidentiality and its limits, fees, recordkeeping, and other matters relevant to informed consent.

You are welcome to ask questions and consider whether the approach feels appropriate for you before deciding to proceed.

Information submitted before a counselling relationship begins is still handled in accordance with applicable privacy law and the Blue Ocean Counselling Privacy Policy.

3. Professional Qualifications and Scope of Practice

Blue Ocean Counselling is operated by David W. Rainoshek, a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC) and member of the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT).

I provide individual online counselling to adults in British Columbia, within the scope of my education, training, experience, professional competencies, and applicable ethical and legal responsibilities.

My counselling interests include existential burnout, religious trauma and belief-system transition, chronic illness and long-term health challenges, and digital saturation and attention fragmentation.

These areas of focus describe the concerns I am particularly interested in exploring with clients. They do not imply that every individual's needs will fall within my professional competence or that counselling will be appropriate in every circumstance.

Counselling through Blue Ocean Counselling does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment, psychiatric care, or other specialized healthcare services.

Where another professional or service may be better suited to a person's needs, I may recommend additional support or an appropriate referral.

4. Not an Emergency or Crisis Service

Blue Ocean Counselling is not an emergency or crisis-response service.

This website, its contact forms, and associated email communications are not continuously monitored and should not be relied upon for urgent assistance.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or attend the nearest emergency department.

If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide or are concerned about someone who may be at risk, you can call or text 988, Canada's Suicide Crisis Helpline, for support.

If you require urgent assistance, please contact an appropriate crisis service, healthcare provider, or emergency service rather than waiting for a response from Blue Ocean Counselling.

Submitting a message through this website does not guarantee an immediate response.

5. General Information and No Guaranteed Outcomes

The writing on this website reflects my professional perspective and is intended to support understanding of counselling, psychological challenges, and aspects of human experience.

People's circumstances, histories, relationships, values, and responses to counselling differ considerably.

Consequently, general information presented here should not be interpreted as individualized professional advice or as a recommendation that a particular approach will be appropriate for every person.

Although I make reasonable efforts to provide thoughtful and accurate information, website content may not address every relevant consideration and may change as professional knowledge and practice develop.

Counselling is a collaborative process, and its outcomes depend on many individual and contextual factors.

No particular result, improvement, or personal transformation is promised or guaranteed.

Nothing in these Terms limits professional duties or legal responsibilities that cannot lawfully be excluded.

6. Consultation Requests and Appointments

Blue Ocean Counselling offers a complimentary 20-minute introductory consultation to prospective clients.

This conversation provides an opportunity to briefly discuss what brings you to counselling, ask questions about my approach, and consider whether working together may be appropriate.

The introductory consultation is not a counselling session, psychological assessment, diagnostic evaluation, or emergency service.

There is no obligation to begin counselling afterward.

Consultations may be requested through the website's contact form. Submitting a request does not guarantee appointment availability or confirm a particular time.

Scheduling arrangements will be discussed and confirmed through subsequent communication.

Please provide accurate contact information so that I can respond to your inquiry.

You are not expected to provide a detailed personal history or disclose sensitive clinical information through the website contact form.

7. Fees, Cancellations, and Payments

Blue Ocean Counselling currently offers individual online counselling sessions at $120 CAD for 60 minutes.

A limited number of reduced-fee appointments may be available for individuals experiencing financial constraints.

The practice generally requires at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment without a cancellation fee.

Late cancellations and missed appointments may be subject to fees, with consideration given to emergencies, sudden illness, and exceptional circumstances.

Details concerning session fees, payment arrangements, cancellation requirements, missed appointments, refunds, and other financial matters are provided in the separate Cancellation & Payment Policy.

These arrangements will also be explained before counselling begins and reflected in the applicable client agreement.

Some extended health insurance plans may reimburse counselling provided by a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor. Coverage varies, and clients are responsible for confirming their eligibility with their insurance provider.

Where website information differs from the terms expressly agreed upon in an individual counselling agreement, the applicable agreement will govern the professional relationship, subject to relevant legal and ethical requirements.

8. Privacy and Third-Party Services

Protecting personal information and respecting confidentiality are fundamental responsibilities of Blue Ocean Counselling.

The collection, use, storage, protection, and disclosure of personal information are addressed in the Privacy Policy.

Personal information is handled in accordance with applicable privacy legislation, including British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), and relevant professional standards.

This website uses services provided by third parties, including Squarespace for website hosting and Google for email services. Other service providers may be involved in scheduling, secure communication, online appointments, or payment processing, depending on the arrangements in use.

Third-party providers may have their own privacy policies, terms of service, and technical practices.

Although reasonable precautions are taken to protect information, ordinary website contact forms and email cannot guarantee complete confidentiality or security.

Please avoid submitting detailed medical histories, sensitive personal information, or confidential clinical material through general website forms or ordinary email.

Appropriate arrangements for communicating sensitive information will be discussed before counselling begins.

Certain photographs, graphics, website features, or other materials may belong to third parties and remain subject to their respective rights.

Substantial reproduction, commercial distribution, or presentation of original website materials as another person's work requires appropriate permission unless otherwise permitted by law.

Visitors are also expected to use the website lawfully and respectfully.

Please do not attempt to interfere with its operation or security, gain unauthorized access to associated systems, transmit malicious software, impersonate another person, or use website communication features to send threatening, abusive, fraudulent, or unlawful material.

Information submitted through the contact form should be accurate to the best of your knowledge. Please avoid sharing another person's private information without appropriate authorization.

These expectations are intended to protect the integrity of the website and the privacy and safety of its users.

10. Website Availability and External Links

I make reasonable efforts to maintain the accessibility and functionality of this website.

However, website availability may occasionally be affected by technical difficulties, maintenance, service-provider interruptions, or other circumstances beyond my immediate control.

I may update, revise, reorganize, or remove website content as the practice develops.

Information concerning services, availability, professional arrangements, or other aspects of the practice may also change over time.

Where material changes affect established clients, those changes will be communicated as appropriate and in accordance with applicable professional obligations and agreements.

This website may contain links to external websites, professional organizations, directories, or other resources.

These links are provided for convenience or additional information. Their inclusion does not necessarily indicate endorsement of all content, opinions, services, or policies available through those websites.

External websites operate independently and may have their own terms, privacy practices, and security arrangements.

Blue Ocean Counselling does not control the content or operation of external websites.

11. Applicable Law and Changes to These Terms

These Website Terms of Use are intended to operate in accordance with the laws of British Columbia and applicable federal laws of Canada.

Nothing in these Terms is intended to restrict rights, remedies, professional responsibilities, or legal protections that cannot lawfully be limited.

If any provision is determined to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue to apply to the extent permitted by law.

These Terms may be revised periodically to reflect changes in website functionality, professional services, administrative procedures, or applicable legal requirements.

The current version will be made available on this page, together with the date of the most recent update.

Changes to these Website Terms do not automatically replace or alter existing counselling agreements or informed-consent arrangements.
