Counselling Disclaimer

Last updated: October 26, 2026

Blue Ocean Counselling provides individual online counselling to adults throughout British Columbia, Canada.

The information on this website is intended to help visitors understand the services offered, my professional approach, and some of the psychological and life challenges that may bring people to counselling.

This information is educational and general in nature. It is not a substitute for individualized counselling, psychological or medical assessment, diagnosis, emergency support, or other appropriate professional care.

The following information explains several important considerations concerning counselling services, professional boundaries, and the use of this website.

1. Establishing a Counselling Relationship

Visiting this website, reading its content, submitting a contact form, or participating in a free introductory consultation does not, by itself, establish an ongoing professional counselling relationship.

A counselling relationship is established through mutual agreement, an appropriate informed-consent process, and confirmation that the services offered are suitable for your circumstances.

Before beginning counselling, we will discuss the nature of the services, confidentiality and its limits, fees, professional responsibilities, and other relevant considerations.

Personal information received before counselling begins remains subject to applicable privacy obligations.

2. Professional Status and Scope of Practice

Blue Ocean Counselling is operated by David W. Rainoshek, a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC) and member of the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT).

I provide individual counselling within the scope of my professional training, experience, competencies, and ethical responsibilities.

My areas of focus include existential burnout, religious trauma and belief-system transition, chronic illness and long-term health challenges, and digital saturation and attention fragmentation.

I am not a physician, psychiatrist, or registered psychologist. Counselling through Blue Ocean Counselling does not include medical or psychiatric diagnosis, medication management, or medical treatment.

Where a person's needs extend beyond my professional competencies or the services I offer, I may recommend other appropriate professionals or resources.

3. Educational Website Content

The articles, descriptions, and other information presented on this website reflect my professional perspective and are intended to encourage understanding and reflection.

They should not be interpreted as individualized advice, a psychological assessment, or a recommendation for a particular treatment.

People may experience similar challenges for very different reasons. Information that resonates with one person's circumstances may not be appropriate for another.

Website content should not be used to diagnose yourself or another person, make urgent medical or safety decisions, or delay seeking appropriate professional care.

4. Not a Crisis or Emergency Service

Blue Ocean Counselling does not provide emergency or crisis-response services.

Website contact forms and ordinary email are not continuously monitored and should not be used when immediate assistance is required.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or attend the nearest emergency department.

For suicide crisis support in Canada, call or text 988, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Please do not wait for a response from Blue Ocean Counselling if you require urgent assistance.

5. Website Inquiries and Electronic Communication

Prospective clients are welcome to use the website contact form to ask questions or request a complimentary 20-minute introductory consultation.

Please avoid including detailed medical histories, sensitive personal information, trauma-related disclosures, or confidential clinical material in your initial inquiry.

Ordinary email and website forms cannot guarantee complete confidentiality or security.

Submitting an inquiry does not guarantee an immediate response, appointment availability, or confirmation that counselling services will be appropriate for your needs.

Once we have connected, we can discuss suitable arrangements for sharing sensitive information and communicating securely.

6. Online Counselling

Blue Ocean Counselling currently provides counselling online rather than in person.

Online counselling offers flexibility and accessibility, but it may not be appropriate for every individual, concern, or circumstance.

Potential limitations include:

  • Internet connectivity problems or technical interruptions

  • Privacy difficulties in the location from which a client attends

  • Reduced access to some non-verbal information

  • Challenges in responding to emergencies from a distance

  • Situations requiring in-person assessment, intervention, or specialized support

Before counselling begins, we will consider whether online services are appropriate for your needs and discuss relevant privacy, safety, and technological considerations.

Clients are encouraged to participate from a private and reasonably secure environment whenever possible.

7. Geographic Location and Service Availability

Blue Ocean Counselling provides individual online counselling to adults who are physically located in British Columbia during their sessions.

The availability of counselling services depends on professional competencies, applicable legal and ethical requirements, the suitability of online counselling, and current appointment availability.

If you are travelling or expect to attend a session from outside British Columbia, please discuss this with me beforehand.

Services cannot automatically be provided in every province, territory, state, or country.

A request for an introductory consultation does not guarantee that ongoing counselling can be offered.

8. Counselling Outcomes

Counselling is a collaborative process shaped by each person's circumstances, experiences, relationships, and goals.

It may support greater self-understanding, emotional awareness, personal agency, and the exploration of meaningful possibilities.

However, no particular outcome, improvement, timeline, or personal transformation can be guaranteed.

The counselling relationship is intended to provide thoughtful professional support, not prescribed answers or predetermined solutions.

You remain an active participant in decisions concerning your life and the direction of our work together.

9. Medical and Other Professional Concerns

Some experiences that bring people to counselling may involve psychological, medical, social, environmental, or combined factors.

Fatigue, changes in sleep, concentration difficulties, physical symptoms, and emotional distress can arise from many different circumstances.

Counselling does not replace appropriate medical evaluation or treatment.

If you are experiencing new, persistent, severe, or concerning physical or psychological symptoms, please consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

In particular, counselling support for chronic illness is intended to address the emotional, psychological, relational, and existential dimensions of living with health challenges. It does not replace medical care or provide treatment for the underlying condition.

10. External Resources and Third-Party Services

This website may contain links to external organizations, professional directories, educational resources, or services.

These links are provided for convenience or additional information.

Blue Ocean Counselling does not control the content, availability, security, or privacy practices of external websites.

The inclusion of a link does not necessarily indicate endorsement of everything published or offered by that organization.

Visitors are encouraged to review the policies and practices of external services before sharing personal information.

11. Changes to This Disclaimer

This Counselling Disclaimer may be updated periodically to reflect changes in professional services, website practices, administrative arrangements, or relevant professional requirements.

The current version will be available on this page, together with the date of the most recent update.

Nothing in this disclaimer is intended to limit professional obligations, legal responsibilities, or rights that cannot lawfully be restricted.

This document complements, but does not replace, the informed-consent process and agreements governing individual counselling services.
